Sudan Archives – experimental R&B presented by talented singer and violinist

Sudan Archives – amazing American singer and violinist – is coming to play Pohoda. Her extraordinary combination of R&B vocals, hip-hop beats and North-American violin motifs and figures has been praised by the likes of Pitchfork, The New York Times, The Guardian or NPR Music and she has already caught the attention of our local media, too. As Musicpress describes it, “Intense songs with a touch of exotic cultures can build a scenery of distant worlds even among skyscrapers, retail chains and business centers. Outstanding!” We couldn’t agree with them more.

Sudan is a self-taught musician who started playing violin at grade school. This is also why her technique distinguishes from the conventional methods of playing the instrument. She rather gets inspired by folk musicians of North East and West Africa. Her music is based on a fusion of folk and electronic approach towards music production. She uses violin as a synthesizer producing harmonious and melodic structures and imitating other instruments. After the release of her self-titled debut EP, she went on tour with Tune-Yards; she played Coachella in April and European festivals Field Day and Best Kept Secret in summer. In May, she released EP Sink, which, according to Pitchfork, “explodes conventional musical logic with disarming ease”. According to Popmatters, “In spite of its name, Sink floats, and Archives continues to stun with everything she is as an artist”. Next year, she is planning shows at Pitchfork Midwinter as well as German Melt! fests and we are glad that visitors at Pohoda 2019 will get to see and hear her within her summer tour in Europe.
