Re-TROS

Re-TROS

Re-TROS (full name Rebuilding the Rights of Statues) is a Beijing-based band that started as a post-punk act and then moved to more electro-kraut-dance music. Their sound can be described as “machine gun drums, crunching heavy metal guitar, and spacey synth washes”. They worked with Brian Eno on their debut EP. At the end of last year, they played as a supporting act on Depeche Mode’s European tour and at the beginning of February they opened for The xx in Beijing. At the beginning of July, they are coming to present their music to Pohoda 2018 audience.

Re-TROS is Liu Min (singer, bass guitar, keys), Hua Dong (singer, guitar, keys) and drummer Jin Huang. At the beginning, they were inspired by the likes of The Cure, Joy Division, Siouxsie and Bauhaus. On their latest album, they are closer to the bands such as Battles, Liars or TV on the Radio. The trio released their first EP Cut Off! in 2005 and their first album (Watch Out! Climate has Changed, Fat Mum Rises…) in 2009. They first made their impact on Western ears as part of the so-called ‘China rock explosion’ of the late 2000s, but the first album that saw its release in Europe actually was their latest, Before the Applause, recorded last year. This album represents a shift from post-punk to electronic music, but the rock drive is still present. They amplify sound intensity with multiple layers created by loopers during their shows. Gigwise named them “China’s best band on post-punk and going global”. What confirms these bold statements is the fact that the biggest Western stars choose them as a supporting act on their tours. Re-TROS will soon show their qualities at Trenčín airport, too.
