Monsieur Perine - Fresh Latin Grammy winners

The latino-swing tracks of this band have over 50 million views on YouTube. Monsieur Periné are recent winners of the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist.

24. March 2016

Their second album Caja de Música was nominated for the best album of the year within the Latin Grammy as well as the American Grammy Awards (the Best Latin American album category). Monsieur Periné have been together since 2007, and built their career themselves in the beginning: shortly after they formed, they won the local Red Bull author contest "El Ensaladero". This led to the appearance at the Colombian alternative Estereo Picnic festival. Positive reviews then brought the interest of publishers. Nevertheless, Monsieur Periné refused all, including Sony Music, their current publisher. Their "indie" focus was also reflected in the title of their debut album Hecho a Mano (handmade). The interest of fans and a growing number of performances, however, required over the time more support than the band members and their friends could ensure. In the end, it was Sony to release their second album Caja de Música, however, the band only signed for two years. The album was produced together with Eduardo Cabra (member of Calle 13, the most successful band in the history of Latin Grammy). Besides that, they collaborated with artists such as Esteman, Vicente Garcia, Juan Pablo Vega, and the band Café Tacvba.

All members of the band except for the singer (Catalina García studied anthropology) majored in music, and that is perhaps why their spontaneously sounding and hardly genre classifiable (Latin-Gypsy-swing-jazz) songs have this fantastic sound, virtuoso passages, and colourful hurdy-harmonic progressions. The band definitely crossed the borders of Colombia as well as those of South and Central America. It caught the attention of the Grammy jury, journalists from NPR, Billboard, NBC News, and us, too. Jazz guitarist Django Reinhard in cafes of interwar Paris, the Afro-Colombian cumbia, American swing, and Amazonian temperament – you will be able to experience this unique adventure of travelling between continents, genres, and the time with Monsieur Periné also at Pohoda 2016.
