Silence as a Remedy: A$AP Ferg on Why Sometimes It’s Best to Listen to Nothing
A$AP Ferg arrives as Darold. In a short interview at this year’s Pohoda for Vogue CS, he discusses individuality as a form of revolution, androgyny in rap, and why we need less dopamine and more peace. Not to escape, but to finally stay – alone with ourselves.
How’s your summer going?
It’s great. Right now, I’m spending time in Europe, then I’ll head back to Harlem and partially to Brooklyn. Summers in New York are always special, but I’m really happy to have the chance to travel, meet new people, and experience different cultures – before I settle back at home.
Your new album Darold feels very personal. What would Darold do, and what would A$AP Ferg never do?
Darold is a painter. A$AP Ferg is an entertainer. They both create for the people, but in different ways. Darold is more of a visual artist – softer, subliminal. A$AP Ferg is more direct, more fun. They give off a similar energy, but the approaches are different. They’re two different artists within me.
You’ve said you don’t just want to make music, but a movement. What should that movement look like
A movement that supports uniqueness. The more individuality there is, the more colours there are in the world. And the more we are ourselves, the more chance we have of healing as people. It’s actually happening already – look at how hip-hop artists express themselves today, how they dress, paint their nails, how androgynous they are… They’re free. They take risks. But it all starts with one thing: being yourself.
How would you describe your music in one word, one hashtag?
Ambitious.
Social media is a loud place. What really stands out to you?
Originality. When someone is truly themselves, it’s like a glitch in the system, but in the best possible way. It disrupts you. And I love that.
What inspires you the most right now?
Silence. We have too little of it. We’re surrounded by an endless stream of information – ChatGPT, YouTube, Netflix, social media… always consuming something. And we often don’t allow ourselves to sit with that inner pain because we just drown it out. But it’s that moment of silence – the space you try to fill – that can really push you forward. When you learn to be in it, new doors will open in your mind. You’ll be more creative, stronger, and more confident.
