Turtle Island

Turtle Island  JP

Under a bridge in the Japanese city of Toyota, a kind of music was born in 1999 that you’d be hard-pressed to fit into any single genre. More than twenty-five years later, this fierce ensemble is coming to Pohoda. Turtle Island freely draws on various forms of traditional music, cultures, and styles from different eras and corners of the world, transforming them into its own original and energetic sound.

This “Far East tribal punk orchestra” blends traditional Japanese taiko drums, Korean percussion such as buk and janggu, wind instruments like the taepyeongso, and modern elements of Western music. The result is a gripping musical ritual that shifts with every beat of the drum and draws the audience into ecstatic dance.

They have held overseas concerts in places such as the EU, New York, China, Morocco, and Taiwan. Since 2012, they have been organizing the "橋の下世界音楽祭 / SOUL BEAT ASIA" inviting artists from around the world and Japanese traditional performing arts, promoting collaboration and exchange across genres.
