How sharp, accurate, ironic and profound can classic and original Slovak plays be? What do we expect from them, and how do we imagine them? What do they tell us about Slovaks, Slovak women and Slovak identity? In its programme We Wanted to Be at Pohoda, the Slovak (Drama) Selection presents excerpts from works by Slovak playwrights and novelists that hold an important place in our theatrical literature. Ján Chalupka marked a milestone with Kocúrkovo, considered the first Slovak play; Kubo shaped our perception of the classics; Dominik Tatarka captured the moral fractures of life under both totalitarian regimes; Pes na ceste (Dog on the Road) explored the depths of the Slovak character; Akcia B shed light on overlooked chapters of modern history; while other works emerged from the need to portray the Brain Drain of the 21st century. What unites them is that they are unmistakably Slovak—our stories and no one else's. They look at us with understanding, perspective and context. Their authors wrote them with a keen sense for language and remarkable intellectual brilliance. We Wanted to Be at Pohoda is a programme dedicated to the festival's anniversary—celebrating a festival that brings people together.
