"O Gadže Bašaven" – Non-Roma Playing Roma Music
A group of non-Roma musicians passionate about Roma music and dance
Workshop led by: LOULA from O Gadže Bašaven
O Gadže Bašaven, meaning “non-Roma playing”, is a bold young band of amazing musicians who will sweep you off your feet with their charisma and surely stir your hearts. Seductive, melancholic, danceable, stylish, worldly, and kinda mischievous – their čardáš party songs are brought to life with fresh energy, inspired by today’s modern young generation.
"We’re passionate admirers of Roma culture, and our aim is to share its beauty – so often buried under heavy stereotyping – with as wide an audience as possible, and in doing so, to promote cultural dialogue between the minority and the majority. We communicate through this stereotypical exaggeration, and we aim to show that beyond the glitter and gold, Roma culture holds a deep, beautiful musical and dance tradition."
The dance school with Loula (Libuša Čižmárik Bachratá) will focus on both traditional and modern Roma dances from across Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. Libuša studied folk dance pedagogy at the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, where she now teaches Spanish flamenco. She immersed herself in Roma dance culture through time spent in settlements across Slovakia and through studies in Transylvania, and continues to hone her skills at Roma parties and celebrations. For the past 13 years, she has collaborated with Ida Kelarová and the Roma choir Čhavorenge, where she teaches and choreographs. The Roma disco session with Loula will be accompanied by live music from O Gadže Bašaven.
