Andrej Dúbravský: I Want to Be a Rooster in a Painting by Andrej Dúbravský
A Selection of Works 2015–2025
Curatorship, exhibition architecture: Boris Belan, Eva Mikulášová
Let us create a new national myth. Instead of monumentalised peasants and maidens trapped among idealised hills, living in sacred harmony with nature, let us place the Body at its centre — a temporary source of suffocating beauty, sensuality, and the pleasure of pure existence: barefoot in the grass, shivering in cold water, carefree on a swing.
Let us imagine life not as it was, but as it could be — without fear, without prejudice, without shores — and perhaps the unbearable lightness of being will transform into an uplifting weight of existence.
I want to be a rooster in a painting by Andrej Dúbravský. A rooster caught in a cry, wings spread wide, neck stretched out, chest proudly raised, full of life and strength in the face of transience. To scream with my whole body, with my whole soul, about life in all its abundance and suffering, joy and despair, transformation and impermanence, cruelty and kindness. Whether it is a cry of climax, a greeting to the sun, or a final spasm before death, I want to be pure beauty, pure joy — fully aware of fragility and ruin.
