Pohoda 2019 will also feature the British post-punk band that produces music that similarly extravagant to their shamanistic costumes – Snapped Ankles. They keep the wild forest energy in their work and performances which primarily means motoric rhythms, the rush of white noise, and post-punk angles. This aural onslaught is played out on homemade synthesizers, electric guitars and sticks beating hell on taut animal skins. The Quietus and Electronic Sounds placed their debut Come Play the Trees among the top 20 albums of the year. Their live performances are an embodiment of weird in the best sense of the word. Pohoda will also feature the Scandinavian-Balkan folk-punk of the band Trio Kastastrofa. As the band says: "Trio Katastrofa is like a shinkansen on an unstable track, which runs in such a way that you’ll never want to get off." The band consists of the Swedish violinist Sofia Hogstadius (specialized in Bulgarian folk music), Swedish-Chilean percussionist Stefan Hedborg and Slovenian accordionist Matija Solce, while everyone is involved vocally as well. Michal Kaščák witnessed one of their flamboyant performance and described it as follows:  “I saw Trio Katastrofa as a duo in an apartment in Ljubljana. There were about twenty of us there, and what began quietly and perhaps with embarrassment on the listeners’ part ended with enthusiasm and applause. Scorpions at the Moscow stadium would’ve been green with envy if they’d witnessed such performance. What the Trio showed was a demonstration of perfect communication with the audience, as well as a demonstration of musical mastery, the joy of which can make you laugh.” → read more

Pohoda 2019 will also see the sludge/hip-hop/hardcore punk band from New York, Show Me the Body. Essential ingredients for their music feature kick-ass drums, dark bass guitar, dissonant banjo and frontman Julian Cashwan Pratt’s aggressive burst of lyrics. In 2016, the band recorded Body War, which was named an excellent debut album by The Fader. According to NME, it “is surely the most New York ‘sounding’ album since The Strokes”. A year later, they recorded a mixtape Corpus I featuring the likes of Princess Nokia, Denzel Curry, Mal Devisa and Cities Aviv. Show Me the Body describe a New York different from what you’ll find in travel guides, ads or TV series. Less glamor and fewer lights, more merciless truth, dirt and screams. They follow the same pattern on their upcoming album. The first fierce preview of the album “Camp Orchestra” indicates that they have taken the sound, lyrics as well as the visual side of their fantastic music to the next level. → read more

Last week we shared our Spotify playlist with you wondering which songs by Pohoda 2019 artists were your favourite ones. Since we received 1500 responses, we decided to evaluate them and process them into tables. As expected, the most frequently mentioned artists were Lykke Li and Liam Gallagher and their hits I Follow Rivers and Wonderwall. We were, however, surprised by the third place for Lola Marsh. She had 3 songs in the top ten most popular songs (just like Liam Gallagher) – that is, if we also count Čerešne. Michael Kiwanuka is also extremely popular, his song Cold Little Heart was ranked third.  Regarding the number of mentions, Kiwanuka got among the biggest stars of the festival.  The Roots, Skepta, Mac DeMarco, The 1975 and Charlotte Gainsbourg are in TOP 10, too. Pohoda 2019 will also feature the South African rapper and poet Maya Wegerif, also known as Sho Madjozi. Her music is dominated by the South African genre Gqom (a minimalist mixture of house and hiphop with distinct bass). The Fader put her in the selection of artists they fell in love with last summer, and her ode to African aesthetic identity was appreciated by the fashion magazines Elle and Vogue. At the end of summer 2018, she caught everybody’s attention with her great show at the Afro Punk Festival in Brooklyn, and in December she performed with YCEE in Central Park at the Global Citizen Festival: Mandela 100 (she shared the stage with artists like Beyoncé, Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder and Pharrell Williams). At the same time, she released her debut Limpopo Champions League. The South African Times wrote that the wait seemed like an eternity, and minutes after the release it became a trend in the country and made people dance in the streets. We believe Sho Madjozi will have a similar effect on visitors of Pohoda 2019. → read more

The recent Grammy award winning producer and multi-instrumentalist mura masa is going to perform at Pohoda 2019. According to last.fm, he “showcases his minimalist, yet effective approach to UK trap music by combining the energy of electronic production and club culture with the rustic and organic sounds and timbres of traditional sample beatmaking”. Guernsey-born producer is the only artist who was nominated for Grammy Awards as the author of the music and art director of the recording package in the same year (debut Mura Masa). After its release, his hit “Lovesick” reached number 1 on the Spotify Viral charts both in the UK and the US. Its newer version featuring A$AP Rocky has been streamed almost 200 million times on this service. In summer, he’s headlining Forbidden Fruit, Ireland, as well as BBC Radio 1 stage at Leeds Festival and will introduce visitors to his music at Pohoda’s 23rd edition, too. → read more

Pohoda 2019 will host also the Dutch ska-rock band Bazzookas. The band won the hearts of our visitors with their pop-up concerts, which take place in a school bus, already at Pohoda 2016 and 2018. We now call the band members our friends. A few months ago, without hesitation or claims for compensation, they agreed to perform at the Doma Dobre concert. At the beginning of January, they also helped promote Slovak music in Groningen, as its members also run the Pinguin Radio, which covered the concerts of bands Vojdi, The Wilderness, and Raptor Koch. We are very pleased that our Dutch friends are coming this year again to make dance the visitors of the Trenčín airport. → read more

Keith Flint was a phenomenon, a unique character, a great singer, and a distinctive dancer. He was also an extraordinary person. Pleasant and friendly backstage, uncompromising and healthily aggressive on stage. We were honoured to have hosted him three times in Slovakia –  once in Bratislava and twice at Pohoda. Michal Kaščák, in response to this sad event, said: "The Prodigy made a revolution in music, for me they belong to the most important figures of musical history. It was my dream to have them at Pohoda. After the memorable year of 2005 we chose their concert as a gift for Pohoda’s twentieth birthday. It was joy to be a promoter when working with The Prodigy. I also saw the concert of Keith Flint’s solo punk project – the band Flint. Keith was a real punker, and I believe that just like Punks not dead is true, Keith Flint is not dead will always be true for me."   → read more

Ekman, that's a club explosion and an extremely interesting character of the Dutch electronic scene, Roel Dijcks. We discovered his raw sound of the 909 and acid riffs rolling through dark atmospheric surfaces on the background of carefully composed drums at Berlin's Berghaine. As he himself says: "Every creation starts with destruction," and that’s the way his tracks sound. In his atypical live set, he combines playful acid electro with the darkness of industrial techno, playing with EBM and destroying everything in between these genres. → read more
