Juvenílie: Ivana Gibová a Márius Kopcsay

Juvenílie: Ivana Gibová a Márius Kopcsay  SK

What did the stars of Slovak literature write about before they found their voices and earned their fame? Ivana Gibová explored introspective, self-examining teenage outbursts about relationships between men and women—and her relationship with herself. Márius Kopcsay began writing in a style that would later define him already in his childhood. Together with Samo Marec, they’ll guide you through their literary excavations.

Ivana Gibová made her debut with the short story collection Usadenina (2013). Her novella Bordeline (2014) was adapted into a stage production of the same name by the Stoka theatre. Her second book, barbora, boch & katarzia (2016), was shortlisted for the Anasoft Litera Prize in 2017, and Gibová became the first-ever winner of the René Prize – the Anasoft Litera award chosen by grammar school students. Her later books, Eklektik Bastard (2021) and Babička©, were also included in the Anasoft Litera top ten, with Babička© going on to win both the Anasoft Litera 2024 and the 2024 Tatra Banka Foundation Art Award. She initiated the book project Mastný muž (KK Bagala, 2023), an anthology of 11 short stories by 11 notable Slovak authors, all written on the same theme.

Márius Kopcsay is a prominent Slovak prose writer and journalist. He debuted on the literary scene with the short story collection Kritický deň (1998), which earned him the Ivan Krasko Prize. He continued thematically and stylistically in Stratené roky (2004) and Zbytočný život (2006), later published together as 33x Márius Kopcsay. His prose is marked by psychological character portrayals, existential irony, and a plain-spoken narrative style. Kopcsay’s work spans short stories, novellas (Medvedia skala, 2009; Jednouholník, 2014), and novels (Domov, 2005; Mystifikátor, 2008; Asvabaždénie, 2015; Stena, 2018; Dedo Lužko, 2024). His writing reflects the societal realities of post-socialist Slovakia, often through tragicomic or marginal protagonists. His most recent novel, Dedo Lužko, is currently among the ten finalists for the Anasoft Litera Prize.
