Ibeyi

Ibeyi

Ibeyi, French/Cuban twin sisters Naomi and Lisa Diaz, offer a double esthetic experience: beautiful music performed by beautiful women.

18. February 2015

They owe their talent to their father, Anga Diaz, famous percussionist (Buena Vista Social Club). The day after he died, Naomi, who is responsible for the rhythmic-passionate portion in the duo, held cajón in her hands for the first time. Pianist Lisa adds harmonic accompaniment and soul atmosphere to the songs. Sisters create melody and a distinctive color by the most graceful instrument of all – their voice.
Their music is influenced by West-African ethnic group of Yoruba. Besides other things, nation of their ancestors is well-known for the highest twinning rate in the world. Duo’s name itself reflects this fact: in Yoruba, Ibeyi translates as “twins”. The ladies have created a minimalist combination of cultural heritage of negro spirituals and of contemporary music that influences teenagers growing up in Paris.
Their debut came out on February 16th and it indeed came off. It made it to UK iTunes weekly selection of new artists. The Guardian writes about the sixth sense of the twins, which crowns their music. MTV division focused on the future of music is full of praise for them and describes the album as “emotionally charged and hypnotic.” We just want to add that there is a place you should totally go to in order not to miss out on these 19-year-old Parisian girls and others – airport in Trenčín.
