Arca VE

One of the most talented artists of recent years makes her way to Pohoda. Listening to Arca, she surprises you every second with sounds and progressions that sound like they're from the future, and at the same time you feel that her music immediately gets under your skin. It's hard to pigeonhole her work into one style, as it contains elements of IDM, experimental, industrial hip-hop, reggaeton, techno and avant-pop. "I don't want to be tied to one genre," says Arca. "I don't want to be labelled as one thing."

She made a strong impression with her work in 2012, when she released the EPs Stretch 1 and Stretch 2. A year later, she released her first album, &&&&&, and her subsequent albums are now cult classics: Xen (2014), Mutant (2015), Arca (2017) and KiCK i, for which she was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Dance/Electronic Album category in 2021.

In addition to her own work, Arca is also a renowned producer. Björk herself invited her to collaborate on her album Vulnicura  and they continued their collaboration on the next record Utopia. She has produced songs and albums for many other stars: FKA Twigs, Kelala, Blood Orange, Frank Ocean, Sega Bodega and Shygirl, who will also perform at Pohoda this year. Arca has also done remixes for Lady Gaga, Deftones, Laurie Anderson and Tirzah.

And on her albums, you can hear other amazing guest artists: Sia, Planningtorock, Shygirl, Rosalía, SOPHIE, Boys Noize, Shirley Mason from the band Garbage, Machinedrum but also Björk.

Throughout her artistic evolution, Arca blurred the lines between the artist, her art, and the tools she used to create it. She co-invented and had custom technology made that transforms her body into an instrument. Using myoelectric sensors, she creates sounds with her muscles and her movements are converted into MIDI tones.

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, and currently based in Barcelona, Arca breaks myths not only in music but also in sexuality and orientation. She identifies as a non-binary trans woman. "I can't think of a a more fitting, important and powerful way to close Pohoda 2023 on the main stage than with Arca’s concert. In addition to being a great artistic contribution to the entire festival, this performance has a significant symbolic meaning after the terrorist attack on Zámocká Street in Bratislava. Arca was the first artist I approached for 2023. The booking was not easy due to the high interest in her art, and not only among music venues. I am proud that Arca will close this year's Pohoda," says festival director Michal Kaščák.

She is said to have seen the future and now invites us to create it with her. Don't miss Arca and her closing performance at Pohoda 2023.
